Feeding Tube Nutrition

A Practical Guide for Creating a Healthier Formula for the Feeding Tube.

Learn how to make better food choices to create radiant health for your loved one who is on a feeding tube program.

Proper nutrition is required for the body to stay healthy and strong. If you’re unable to eat and it’s hard to swallow food, you may need a feeding tube, which is called percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or PEG for short, in medical terminology.

The tube is surgically inserted into your stomach, and is used to provide food, liquids, and/or medicines.

Even with a feeding tube, it is possible to get the essential nutrients needed for healing, creating a strong immune system, and  maintaining body weight. A healthy diet includes proteins, fats, carbohydrates and optimum hydration. They are all important components and work together like a symphony in the body.

Depending on the situation, when someone gets a feeding tube, you will need to learn some new skills, including how to use and care for the tube..

Adapting to this process may take a little time and patience, but before you know it, you will get accustomed to doing this, and will do it easily and accurately.

As you start on this program, you will need to focus and concentrate on what you are doing and be faithful in the fundamentals of keeping the equipment clean.

Just remember that obtaining optimum nutrition can be one of the most important parts of maximum health and healing for a radiantly healthy life.

Grilling Tips

Grilling Tips!

As you fire up your barbecue grill for the Fourth of July, Labor Day, or other fun weekend get-togethers this summer, it is important to know a few tips to protect you and your friends and family from the potentially dangerous chemicals that grilling your meat can create.

Grilling, frying, broiling, (and other cooking methods that expose meat to extremely high temperatures), “creates potential cancer-causing compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs).

This is especially true when the meat is charred or overcooked. Moreover, when fat drips on the heat source, the plumes of smoke can coat meat with other dangerous chemicals.

The worst offenders are fatty, well-done beef, pork and lamb, but even poultry and fish produce HCAs when seared.”(1)

If you love grilling, here are a few ways to reduce the dangers:
• Buy lean types of meat and trim off all visible fat.
• “Marinate meat. Researchers have found that this can decrease HCAs by more than 90 percent. Use combinations of beer, cider, vinegar, citrus juices, mustard, herbs, and brown sugar.”(2)
• Precook meat in an oven, and then finish on the grill.
•Try using a lower heat. Don’t put the meat right over the fire. Put the meat to the side of the grill where the heat isn’t as hot.
• Turn the meat more frequently, and grill the meat just until it is cooked and safe to eat. Don’t cook it until it is charred. You can use a meat thermometer to check and make sure it is done.
• Avoid breathing in smoke, which also has risks.
• Veggie burgers, seitan (a protein-rich food made of wheat gluten, used as a meat substitute in vegetarian dishes), Portobello mushrooms and vegetables have little or no formation of HCA’s when grilled.

Try going vegetarian once in a while!
It tastes good, and is good for you!

How To Sleep And Rest Better

How To Sleep and Rest Better

Sleep can become a problem in today’s high paced, stressed-out world.

It’s World Sleep Day, and so I’m addressing a vital part of our lives and our well-being.

I’ve heard more and more people of all ages tell me how they can’t get to sleep, and that they  have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

In addition to this, as we get older, we don’t produce as much melatonin, which is what helps us sleep. If we don’t have enough melatonin, our body will pull it from our serotonin reserve in order to make it. You can buy melatonin as a supplement at the store. It comes in different strengths (one to three milligrams).

Dr. Gary Massad has researched melatonin and sleep problems in depth. He told me that the studies show that if you take half a milligram of melatonin around three in the afternoon and then another half gram again about an hour before bedtime, it will work most effectively.

If a melatonin supplement is taken, then it saves the store of serotonin, which affects our mood. If you aren’t draining it, you will have more serotonin to help with positive moods. Melatonin works much better with ample vitamin B in your system. If you are concerned about vitamin B—if you are a vegan or vegetarian—take a good whole-food vitamin B supplement.

Some think that a vitamin B spray under the tongue is the best type of supplement source, because it is absorbed better and faster. Other hormone imbalances can also disrupt our sleep patterns, so have your doctor check you for any hormone imbalance or a vitamin deficiency.

I recommend only using a vitamin from a whole food source. I do not recommend ever taking synthetic vitamins.

You might also listen to recorded sounds of rain or ocean waves to help with sleep. They can relax your mind. Experiment to find out what works best for you. In fact, what works for you might change from time to time.

What Can Help You Sleep?

  • Eat a light, comforting early supper.

  • Exercise and breathe deeply.

  • Make the bedroom a place of peace and tranquility, with as little radiation, annoying noise, and light as possible.

  • Write down your list of things you must do tomorrow. This will get all those thoughts out of your brain about the next day.

  • Think calming thoughts that are positive, uplifting, and filled with gratitude and thankfulness for 20 minutes right before bedtime.

  • Write down five things that you are grateful for, or five miracles that happened to you or your child today, or five things that you want to happen tomorrow. Focus on the most positive things you can. (I found this was a perfect time for me to put these in my children’s baby books for them for the future, so they read about what they were doing as they grew up. First words, steps, discoveries, accomplishments, food favorites, people they met, funny events, and more.)

  • Get your hormones, adrenals, and vitamin levels checked for deficiency or see if a supplement like melatonin helps.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Read a good book, with a positive message.

  • Try a sleep CD to help relax the mind and body.

  •  If your mattress is more than 10 years old, consider replacing it. Falling asleep and waking up with well-rested starts with a quality mattress.

All of these things will contribute to being better able to  relax later and rest with peace for a healing sleep.

Food and Sleep Patterns

When you rest is when your body heals itself. I suggest you don’t eat anything about three hours before bed. If your body has to digest and process food, then it’s working. Allow it to rest and restore overnight, it needs to be free of chores and responsibilities. So give your body a break and have some soup for dinner or a light vegetarian meal. It would help to make your morning and lunch meal the main meals of the day.

If digestion is an issue, lie down on your left side for about 20 minutes.

According to Ayurveda healing tradition, when we sleep on the left side our lymphatic system drains more efficiently, it makes our heart beat easier, supports the spleen function, our bile flows easier and because of gravity, it encourages the food to move more effortlessly from the small intestine to the large intestine. When you lie on the left side, the stomach and pancreas hang naturally, allowing for optimal and efficient digestion.

Good advice comes from an old Ayurvedic remedy. If your body is acidic, try drinking a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water to neutralize the acid. I add a pinch of unrefined, mineral rich sea salt to this as well.  What an easy, inexpensive solution! Drink healthy, hydrating fluids during the day, but don’t drink too much right before bed. Then you won’t have a need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Drinking herbal nighttime teas can also help promote rest and sleep.

Relaxing Bath To Help With Sleep

Consider taking an evening bath to relax and calm yourself before bedtime. Fill up a warm or hot bath and soak for ten minutes or more. I like to put mineral salts (Epsom salts or sea salt) in my bath. I also add organic apple cider vinegar to aid in adjusting my PH balance in my body. Then right before I step into the tub, I add a few drops of one of my favorite essential oils. I add it last so it won’t evaporate before I can get in and enjoy the aroma. For nighttime and relaxation, my favorite is lavender oil.

My formula for my bath water is 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup Epsom salts, 1⁄4 cup of organic apple cider vinegar, and 5–10 drops of essential oil.

I have a water purifier on my showerhead and just fill my bath through my shower head. I don’t like to have chlorine and fluoride in my shower and bath water because our skin absorbs things so quickly and easily. (That’s why so many medicines are on patches.) Both chlorine and fluoride are carcinogens.

Did you know that chlorine was the first chemical developed to kill in warfare? That’s why I avoid it whenever I can. The purifier also removes fluoride and other toxins.

Peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus oils invigorate me, so I use those in the morning. If you can’t take a bath, a good foot soak can be beneficial and relaxing as well.

When finishing a bath, make the final rinse a cool rinse to lock in the moisture to shrink the pores. After your shower or footbath, dry off and put on a soothing body lotion or cream to seal in the moisture. This helps avoid itchy, dry skin during the night.

If you’re like me, you sleep better in comfortable clothing and sheets, so you might splurge on the quality of your bed linens and night clothes. It makes me feel better and I look forward to putting them on and getting into bed. I feel I’m pampering myself.

Air Purifier and Humidifier

I have an air decontamination (purifier) machine, which purifies the air in my home and in my bedroom. This machine cleans my air of mold, virus, fungus, and bacteria from the hard and soft surfaces as well as in the air. I also like the sound my portable machine makes, because it drowns out the sound of the outside world. There is an induct system that also works on the air conditioning system that makes no noise, if you prefer that. This air decontamination machine also makes the oxygen in my environment more bio available and easier to breathe. It is completely chemical free and can remove chemical contaminants from the environment safely and efficiently. I sleep so much more soundly, now that I am using this. This is an excellent machine for anyone who wants a healthier indoor environment or who has any kind of breathing problem. ( Contact me if you would like me to send you information on this. Nancy @ nancyaddison.com)

There are also humidifiers for winter when the heat can dry out the air. This can help with anyone who has trouble with nosebleeds in the winter. The inside of the nose gets too dry and can crack and cause bleeding. A cotton swab dipped in olive oil or coconut oil and rubbed inside the nostrils a few times a day will keep them moist and less likely to dry out and crack. Doing this helped my family, especially when we were in high-altitude places in the winter.

So, happy sleep day and I wish you a restful nights sleep!

Love, Nancy

Super Breakfast Smoothie Recipe

Super Breakfast Smoothie

Smoothies are symphonies of nutrients and fiber! You can have smoothies as a meal or a snack, or freeze them in popsicle molds and have them as a healthy desert.

I put healthy fat in my smoothies because my research shows it gives us energy, supports our brain health, and helps us absorb nutrients in fruits and other food more easily.

Chew on a bite of blueberry or cherry right before you have a smoothie, because it will help prepare your body for digestion.

Serves: One.

Ingredients

1 tbsp. coconut oil

2 tbsp. cold-pressed hemp or flax seed oil

1 scoop Protein Powder (Garden of Life is a good choice, or freshly ground, sprouted hemp seeds.)

2 tbsp. raw organic sprouted seed or nut butter

1-2 tsp. coconut probiotics (from refrigerated section of the grocery store)

1 banana with the skin (Clean the banana, cut off the ends, and cut it into chunks before putting it into the blender. The skin has more nutrients in it than the banana and is high in fiber.)

1 cup berries (cherries, strawberries, wild blueberries or berries of choice)

1 1⁄2 cups organic vanilla non-dairy milk (coconut or hemp work well)

Directions

Blend in blender until smooth and creamy.

Good News To Start Off A Friday! Aldi Stops Selling Products That Contain Neonicotinoid Pesticides And Is Going Organic By May 1, 2017

Good news to start off a Friday from Nancy, your Renegade Nutritionist

Most of you know how much certain things mean to me, such as protecting our bees, safeguarding our environment, and living an organic lifestyle.

I am not that easily impressed, but there is a supermarket called Aldi, that is known for its low prices, and they have done something that is extraordinary.

Aldi is removing all products that contain neonicotinoid pesticides. (If you remember, I had a petition against the EPA to ban the manufacturing and use of neonicotinoid pesticides, because they are decimating the environment and killing the bees and butterflies. The EPA has still not banned them, even though the Federal Courts ruled that they should.

The EPA has even admitted knowing that the following poisons are the major reason the bee populations are being destroyed:

*Chlorpyrifos

*Clothianidin

*Cypermethrin

*Deltamethrin

*Fipronil

*Imidacloprid

*Sulfoxaflor

*Thiamethoxam

Aldi is not only doing this environmentally-positive action of removing all products that contain the neonicotinoid pesticides, but they are also committing their Aldi grocery stores to be all organic by May 1, 2017.

Hooray for this ethical company that is doing the right thing for all of us.

They are a no-frills store with positive goals and reasonable prices, which may make organic food affordable for everyone.

I’m giving them my gold star of approval.

Here is the link to read my information about the bees, the neonicotinoids and the environment.

http://www.organichealthylifestyle.com/the-plight-of-pollinators-today/

Special Note:

Also be aware as you are buying plants for your garden this spring, that the plants and fruit trees, etc. may have these toxic poisons in them. Ask your nursery to be sure.

One way to order organic plants without toxins, is to order them online from a respected company like Seeds of Change, an organic seed and plant company.

Let’s Talk About Soy

Let’s Talk About Soy

Many people eat and drink soy and soy products. I’m asked questions about soy frequently, so I thought I would address this food.

Soy has many negative effects on health because it is difficult to digest, affects your hormones, and is closely linked to GMOs, pesticides, and harmful processing chemicals.

Soy protein is a complete protein but can be very hard to digest. The Chinese did not eat unfermented soybeans, because they contain quantities of natural toxins or “anti-nutrients” and are high in phytic acid. This means ingesting unfermented soy can prevent the body from absorbing other nutrients like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, and particularly protein.

In China, soy was not used as a food until fermentation techniques were discovered in the Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BC). When soy is fermented—as in miso, tempeh, or soy sauce—the soy nutrients are more digestible and easier to absorb.

Soy has been linked to gastric distress and pancreatic problems, including cancer, and it can impair our body’s uptake of amino acids.(1) It also contains goitrogens, which are known to suppress the functioning of the thyroid.(2)

Most soy on the market today is from genetically modified (GM) seed. 91 percent of soybeans planted in the United States are GM, and the rate is rapidly growing throughout the world, according to Natural News newsletter.(3)

Dr. Gregory Damato points out that “more than 95 percent of GM soy (and 75 percent of other GM crops) is engineered to tolerate glyphosate herbicide, the most common formulation of which is Roundup. (4)
Recent studies by French scientists on the Toxicity of Roundup and Glyphosate found this herbicide carcinogenic.(5)
They found it:

1. Causes cell cycle dysregulation, which is a hallmark of tumor cells and human cancers.

2. Inhibits DNA synthesis in certain parts of the cell cycle— the cells’ reproductive process, which underlies the growth and development of all living organisms.

3. Impedes the hatchings of sea urchins. (Sea urchins were used because they constitute an appropriate model for the identification of undesirable cellular and molecular targets of pollutants.) The delay was found to be dose dependent on the concentration of Roundup. The surfactant polyoxyethylene amine (POEA), another major component of Roundup, was also found to be highly toxic to the embryos when tested alone, and could therefore be a contributing factor.(6)

These reasons are some reasons why I don’t eat soy if I can avoid it, or any other genetically modified food or non-organically grown food.

I recommend reading more about glyphosate herbicide if you are eating non-certified organic foods.

Be aware that soy is added to tortillas, breads, fake meats, and many other foods, supposedly for the “health” benefit. In my opinion, it is really used as cheap filler.

Health and nutrition expert Dr. Joseph Mercola writes that the advertising industry has misled the public about the safety and health benefits of soy, as well as the widespread use of it in the Asian diet. He states, “A study of the history of soy use in Asia shows that the poor used it during times of extreme food shortage, and only when the soybeans were carefully prepared (e.g. by lengthy fermentation) to destroy the soy toxins.”(7)

He goes on to say that, contrary to some reports in the West, it is not the usual practice in Asian countries to feed soy milk to infants.(8)
Be aware of this when you read food labels that refer to soy’s health benefits, even those that display an FDA statement that soy can help lower the risk of heart disease.

In 2000, two FDA employees, Daniel Doerge and Daniel Sheehan, were so worried about the danger of soy that they wrote a controversial letter to their employer, protesting the positive health claims for soy that the FDA was approving at the time.

They wrote:
There is abundant evidence that some of the isoflavones found in soy—including genistein and equol, a metabolite of daidzen—demonstrate toxicity in estrogen sensitive tissues and in the thyroid. This is true for a number of species, including humans.
Additionally, isoflavones are inhibitors of the thyroid peroxidase which makes T3 and T4.

Inhibition can be expected to generate thyroid abnormalities, including goiter and autoimmune thyroiditis. There exists a significant body of animal data that demonstrates goitrogenic and even carcinogenic effects of soy products.
Moreover, there are significant reports of goitrogenic effects from soy consumption in human infants.(9)

Think carefully about the effects that soy can have on the thyroid (our master gland which affects almost all aspects of our health) and estrogen. Many doctors and nutritionists are soy proponents. Be careful and research this yourself if you are concerned.

A billion-dollar industry advertises soy as the answer to many health issues, from heart disease to weight problems. Soy is frequently touted as the answer to women’s menopause hormone imbalances. This is one of the reasons why so many doctors and older women were happy to embrace it.

Soy and soy-based products contain isoflavones or phytoestrogens, which are plant-based estrogens. Soy is not the only food that contains phytoestrogens. There are other less controversial and more digestible foods with phytoestrogens you can include in your diet.

For men, eating soy isoflavones can significantly reduce testicular function and lower luteinizing hormone (LH) production, which is what signals the testicles to work. A high soy intake which potentially lowers level of LH increases the probability of estrogen dominance in men, contributing to hair loss, swollen and cancerous prostates, and insulin resistance.

Dr. Doris Rapp, MD, a leading pediatric allergist, asserts that environmental and food estrogens are responsible for the worldwide reduction in male fertility.(10)

Soy consumption has been linked with cancer in adults, notably breast cancer, as I read in an article by Jim Rutz. He went on to say:

That’s why the governments of Israel, the UK, France, and New Zealand are already cracking down hard on soy… In sad contrast, 60 percent of the refined foods in US supermarkets now contain soy. Worse, soy use may double in the next few years because (last I heard) the out-of-touch medicrats in the FDA hierarchy are considering allowing manufacturers of cereal, energy bars, fake milk, fake yogurt, etc., to claim that “soy prevents cancer.”

It doesn’t…P.S.: Soy sauce is fine. Unlike soy milk, it’s perfectly safe because it’s fermented, which changes its molecular structure. Miso, natto, and tempeh are also okay, but avoid tofu.(11)

Soy can create allergic reactions. In 1986, Dr. Stuart Berger, MD, placed soy among the top seven allergens, one of the “sinister seven.”

Finally, completely avoid soy protein isolate. It is a byproduct of soybean oil processing that is found in a huge number of vegan foods. A standard soybean contains 40 percent protein, while soy protein isolate is usually about 95 percent protein. But it poses serious health risks.

The processing of soy protein isolate is done mostly in aluminum tanks that leach high levels of aluminum into the product. Then MSG, flavorings, preservatives, sweeteners, and synthetic chemicals are frequently added to help get rid of the “beany” taste and add more “meaty” flavor. In animal experiments, the test animals fed soy isolate developed enlarged organs, particularly the thyroid and the pancreas.

After the soybeans—which are mostly GMO varieties—are crushed to extract the oil, the leftover soy “chunks” (which still contain fiber, water, some fat, and other carbohydrates) then undergo another extraction process that involves hexane—a neurotoxin that is also a substantial component in gasoline.

The next step involves soaking these chunks in a chemical mixture (which commonly contains ammonia and hydrochloric acid) to help concentrate protein levels and achieve a sponge-like texture. Finally, the mixture is spray-dried.(12)

Soy protein isolate can only be made in factories. Healthy, whole foods should be possible to make in a kitchen. You can grind your own almond flour at home from almonds. You can make your own seitan (wheat meat) at home. You can make your own rice milk or hemp milk at home with a blender and some whole-food ingredients.

The only way to make soy protein isolate is by using extremely flammable and hazardous chemicals, like hexane, and extreme temperatures that you could not possibly obtain in a kitchen setting.

Hexane is not used in the production of organic soy protein isolate. For a list of which protein bars and soy burgers are made using hexane-extracted soy protein isolates and which aren’t, go to: www.cornucopia.org/hexane-guides/hexane_guide_bars.html.

As I researched soy, I came to seriously reconsider its use. I avoid it in most forms, but I do, however, use organic, non-GMO fermented soy sauce. I also use organic miso and tempeh occasionally. There are alternative organic misos now that are made with brown rice, garbanzo beans, and barley—and they taste terrific. I buy these instead of the soy variety.

In conclusion, I do not recommend soy or soy protein for a healing diet.

If you are going to buy soy, purchase certified organic, sprouted, non-GMO soy because it won’t be from genetically modified seeds. If you must buy soy, purchase sprouted and/or fermented, non-GMO, certified organic soy for a more digestible and less harmful soy protein, and avoid soy protein isolates.

Be The One Everyone Wants To Kiss!

Be The One Everyone Wants To Kiss!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we all want to have the best kiss possible.

There are a few ways to have better dental health and whiter teeth. Here are my “Top Five” easy, inexpensive ways that you can improve your dental health and whiten your teeth at home.

First:

Brush your teeth three times daily.

Second:

Floss Your Teeth

Directions:

Floss your teeth two to three times daily to keep the stains from lodging between your teeth.

Third:

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic Remedy used to enhance oral health and well-being. Oil pulling detoxifies the body, removes unsightly stains on teeth, and prevents illness and disease.

My daughter and I did it infrequently for a while and never noticed a difference; but when we did it on a continual basis for 15 days without interruption, the difference was remarkable.

Amanda saw a huge difference in her gums, teeth, and overall health, when she finally did the oil pulling consistently. I have also noticed a significant difference between when I do it and when I don’t.

Try this on a consistent basis for a couple of weeks, and see how amazingly clean and fresh your mouth feels.

Ingredients:

Pure, organic coconut oil

Unrefined sea salt

A Tongue scraper

A Toothbrush

Purified, (non-chlorinated) water

Directions:

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth or eating anything, take 1 teaspoon of pure, organic coconut oil into your mouth and swish the oil around in your mouth, tilting your head back, so that it can get to the back molars.

It is very important that you keep the oil in your mouth the whole time and Avoid Swallowing It. (It may taste strange the first few days, but you will get used to it—just stick with it.)

Pull the oil through your teeth and chew the oil so that it activates the saliva. Do this for at least 10 -15 minutes. The oil will turn white in your mouth as you do this. The oil pulls toxins and excess mucus out of the blood through the mucus membranes in the mouth.

Spit the oil out in a tissue or the toilet.Avoid Swallowing the Oil. After spitting it out, swish your mouth with a cup of warm purified water, along with a pinch of unrefined, mineral-rich sea salt.

Immediately following the sea salt-water rinse, brush your teeth thoroughly. Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue well, and then use a toothbrush to clean the roof of the mouth.

Next, drink 2–3 glasses of purified (non- chlorinated and non- fluoridated) water.

The result will be a fresh, relaxed feeling. Gums will bleed less and teeth will get whiter.

If you do this on a continual basis, you may notice that the dark, puffy circles under your eyes will start to disappear. You may even have more energy, a better memory, and a better night’s sleep.

Fourth:

Eat Fresh Organic Apples and Strawberries

Consuming strawberries or apples and chewing them thoroughly can help whiten teeth. Apples and strawberries contain malic acid and vitamin C. The malic acid is like an astringent that helps remove surface stains, and the vitamin C helps remove plaque. You can even mash up some fresh strawberries or use a grated apple and brush your teeth with the mixture once in a while.

Note: Adding some fresh organic celery or carrots to your diet can also help promote dental health.

Fifth:

Baking Soda & Lemon Juice

Baking soda and lemon juice have been used for years to help clean teeth and gums.

Note: Only use if you have strong tooth enamel. Use only once every month or two. The acidic nature of the lemon juice can be too strong for the enamel.

This may not be for everyone. You can use the baking soda alone, if you are concerned about using the lemon juice with it.

Baking Soda can make a good toothpaste used all by itself.

Ingredients:

Baking soda

Freshly squeezed lemon juice

Directions:

In a bowl, mix a tiny bit of baking soda with the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon. The mixture will bubble slightly.

Use cotton swabs or cotton gauze to wipe saliva and excess plaque from your teeth.

Then apply the mixture. Leave the mixture on your teeth for about 25 seconds before gently brushing it off with a toothbrush.

Note: This is not long; so use a timer so you remember to rinse it off.

Always remove the mixture after 25 seconds.

You want to remove it before its acid could erode the tooth enamel. Never leave it on your teeth over one minute.

Wishing you a smile that is bright and healthy!

Tests Reveal That High Levels Of Weed Killer Is In Food, Including Baby Food.

Tests Reveal That High Levels Of Weed Killer Is In Our Food Supply, Including Baby Food!

Why Aren’t We Hearing Or Reading About This In The News?

An FDA-registered Food Safety Testing Laboratory recently found extremely high levels of the pesticide glyphosate (the active ingredient in round-up weed killer made by Monsanto) in some popular foods, including Cheerios, Oreos, Doritos, and Ritz Crackers! (1) Scientific evidence demonstrates that levels as low as 0.1 part per billion (ppb) can cause extreme harm to one’s health. Cheerios measured as much as 1.125.3 ppb! (2)

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup, is the most heavily used chemical weed-killer in history. “U.S. regulators allow a very high level of daily glyphosate residue in America’s food. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) limit is set at 1.75 milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight per day (written 1.75 mg/kg bw/day) in the U.S., versus a more cautious 0.3 mg/kg bw/day in the European Union.

Tolerances have been set through the submission of corporate-sponsored studies and industry influence on the regulatory process. New research shows that Roundup causes liver and kidney damage in rats, as reflected in changes in the functions of 4,000 genes at only 0.05 parts per billion (ppb) glyphosate equivalent, indicating damage.” (3)

Recent studies on the Toxicity of Glyphosate (Roundup) found this herbicide carcinogenic.[4]

They found glyphosate:

  1. Causes cell cycle dysregulation, which is a hallmark of tumor cells and human cancers. It’s deemed a carcinogen by the World Health Organization’s team of international cancer experts. Strong evidence from animal studies has linked the chemical to various forms of cancer, and “limited evidence” from human studies has linked it to non-Hodgkins lymphoma in particular. (5)

  2. Inhibits DNA synthesis in certain parts of the cell cycle—the cells’ reproductive process, which underlies the growth and development of all living organisms. It disrupts hormones and leads to reproductive problems, early onset puberty, obesity, diabetes, and some cancers. (6)

  3. Impedes the hatchings of sea urchins. (Sea urchins were used because they constitute an appropriate model for the identification of undesirable cellular and molecular targets of pollutants.) The delay was found to be dose dependent on the concentration of Roundup. The surfactant polyoxyethylene amine (POEA), another major component of Roundup, was also found to be highly toxic to the embryos when tested alone, and could therefore be a contributing factor. [7)

I would like to let our voices be heard, so that the news will report these findings, and so that the FDA and the USDA will put a ban on this chemical that is leaching into our water and our environment, and is poisoning our food supply.

If we do nothing, they assume we do not care.

The only way they will listen is if we demand they listen. Please share this story with your friends, family, etc.  The only way this injustice will be corrected is if enough of us stand up and demand that something be done to stop the poisoning of our food supply.

Here is a detailed list from Food Democracy Now, showing the test results. (8)

Why is this weed killer  in non-GMO and organic food?

It’s because the widespread use of this chemical has seeped into the water supply, the soils, and the air. Glyphosate is not just used on GMO crops, even though most GMO crops were developed to withstand huge amounts of this chemical herbicide to be dumped on them in the field. There are quite a few farmers, who are not organic farmers, who use it to help dry their oat and wheat crops. In all of these types of crops, the round-up is then in the food, and is not able to be washed off.

They also use these toxic herbicides, containing glyphosate, extensively in public areas like parks.  They are neurotoxins and can cause nerve damage. They can go right through the skin and directly into the blood stream. Think of your baby crawling on the grass or your pet’s nose sniffing it. Look at the rise in cancer in pets and children in the US. I find this incredibly alarming.

The American Cancer Society states on their website that Cancer is the second leading cause of death in children aged 1 to 14 in 2016.

Likewise, the Veterinary Cancer Society states that cancer is the leading cause of death in 47% of dogs.

Everyone seems to act as if this is something that is normal, but I firmly believe it to be a direct result of the toxins (like carcinogens such as glyphosate) in our environment, food and water.

Pollinators travel all over the place gathering food from flowers. Even though “there is no legal tolerance level for glyphosate in honey in the United States,” (10) Glyphosate is used so extensively, that the FDA found it in every single honey they tested. (11)

“Even though the FDA annually examines foods for residues of many pesticides, it has skipped testing for glyphosate residues for decades. It was only in February of this year that the FDA said it would start some glyphosate residues analysis…The government and Monsanto have maintained that any glyphosate residues in food would be minimal enough to be safe. But critics say without robust testing, glyphosate levels in food are not known. And they say that even trace amounts may be harmful because they are likely consumed so regularly in many foods.” (12)

Bees are so sensitive that these toxins are one of the reasons the bee population has declined by over 90% in the last few years, and those are only the hive bees that can be counted. We can’t effectively count the wild bees  or other pollinators, who live singularly.

Can we even guess how many people have glyphosate-filled foods in their pantry? This can be one of the reasons half the men in the US have cancer. One third of women have cancer. The leading cause of death in the US of children is cancer.

So, my question is: why isn’t our government protecting our food supply from these cancer-causing chemical and herbicides?

Why isn’t this type of information being reported?

This is in my opinion the slow poisoning of Americans, and it’s being allowed by our own government.

I just wonder how much money is changing hands from Monsanto and other companies that manufacture these glyphosate herbicides, to these agencies or the people who are in charge of regulating the toxins in our environment and our food supply. I can’t imagine any other reason for them to allow this kind of continued use to happen, especially after being shown time and time again that they are harmful.

I feel we need to ban lobbyists, and also demand that our government regulators start protecting us from these harmful poisons that are saturating our food, our environment and our water supply.

According to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) archives in the United States, it has been documented that Monsanto knew of the potential of glyphosate to cause cancer in mammals as long ago as 1981. (13)

Why would the EPA create a cover-up, or continue to allow Monsanto and other companies to use these documented cancer-causing herbicides on crops?

I personally am so disgusted with the regulations for our food in this country.

I think it’s disgraceful what our country’s regulatory agencies allow to happen to our food, (including baby food!), our environment and our water. (14)

I don’t think it will stop until we demand it.

We need to share this story and other ones like the Food Democracy Now’s documented studies, until they can’t deny it any longer, and must do something about it.

Just remember that you, your family and your friends’ health depends on what you ingest.  Avoid the herbicide-laden foods by choosing certified organic foods. These toxic chemicals, including glyphosate, are prohibited on organic crops.

In closing, I’m asking for a call to action.

Please share this story on twitter, facebook, etc.

We need to demand that our food be safe.

The government should take action on this, because it’s the ethical thing to do.

The Power Of Plants And Flowers On Our Health And Well-being

The Power Of Plants And Flowers On Our Health And Well-being

Fall is here and winter is just around the corner. At this time of year, we tend to spend much more time indoors. We aren’t outside as much and around the gardens or plants in our yard or park. Having plants, going for a walk in the park, or even looking at a landscape poster can produce psychological benefits that include reduction of stress,  and improving concentration.

In a research study by Rutgers University, Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology decided to explore the power of plants and flowers on our health and well being. She said that “What’s most exciting about this study is that it challenges established scientific beliefs about how people can manage their day-to-day moods in a healthy and natural way,”

In this study, a “team of researchers explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction in a 10-month study of participants’ behavioral and emotional responses to receiving flowers. The results show that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods.

  1. Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.

  2. Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.

  3. Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends.

“Common sense tells us that flowers make us happy,” said Dr. Haviland-Jones. “Now, science shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, they have strong positive effects on our emotional well being.” (1)

Flowers and plants lift the spirit and clean the air.
So, my suggestion to everyone would be to surround yourself and your loved ones with fresh flowers and/or plants. Plants add vibrancy and fresh air, and change the feeling of a room.

Not just the Rutger’s study, but there are many studies I’ve read over years ago that said adding a vase of fresh flowers or a plant to a room made people’s attitudes happier and more positive. I add flowers and plants to my space and to the spaces of those I love, whenever I can.

When a loved one is in a nursing home, hospital, or small place where they can’t get out much, it’s an easy thing to add a plant or vase of flowers to the room.

Plants increase humidity, reducing some of the drying effects of indoor heaters and air systems.

Take a small cutting from the garden of mint or ivy and put it in water, and—presto!—you have a plant that will create a new feeling to the room.

Clas Bergvall, an ethnologist at Umeå University in Sweden, wanted to know what plants did for people emotionally—so he dedicated his doctoral dissertation to the subject. What his research found was that:

  • Research suggests that indoor plants reduce symptoms of fatigue, headache, cough and dry skin.

  • Studies show that plant filled rooms contain up to 60 percent fewer airborne molds and bacteria than rooms without plants.

  • The following plants are best at  decontaminating air and balancing humidity: Areca, Reed and Dwarf date palms; Boston ferns, English ivy and Peace Lilies. (2)

When my former husband (an environmental trial lawyer) was conducting environmental impact studies on air quality, I learned that plants are masters at cleaning certain toxins from the air.

Ficus plants are great at cleaning formaldehyde out of the air. Low-light plants like the ivy plants are great to use in general. Many low-light plants that have shallower root systems are the easiest and most beneficial for removing toxins from indoor air.

Plants remind us of  life, beauty, spirituality and make us more introspective. By incorporating plants and flowers into our natural environment, they can bring calm to our chaotic lives.
